Orcas Off the Northumberland Coast: A Rare and Thrilling Sight Near the Farne Islands
Killer whales swimming off Northumberland coast
Northumberland’s wild coast has made headlines once again – but this time, it’s thanks to some rather extraordinary visitors. A pod of orcas (killer whales) has been spotted off the coast near Beadnell and the Farne Islands, captivating both locals and tourists with their majestic presence.

Captured by Seahouses fisherman Richard Dawson, the stunning initial footage showing an orca circling beneath his crab and lobster boat before breaching the surface, spraying a mist from its blowhole, and gliding effortlessly into the deep. The video has since gone viral, shared by Captain William Shiel of Billy Shiel Boat Tours, racking up thousands of views and sparking widespread excitement. There have since been more sightings in the days following the initial display.
Why Are Orcas Visiting the Farne Islands?
According to Professor Per Berggren of Newcastle University, these orcas – thought to belong to a pod from the Orkney Islands – have likely travelled south in pursuit of food. This time of year, the Farne Islands are teeming with young grey seals, one of the orca’s preferred prey species. The waters are “crystal clear” and rich with marine life, making them a haven for wildlife and an emerging hotspot for orca sightings.

A Growing Pattern of Sightings
Captain Shiel has noted that this is now the third year running that orcas have been sighted off the Northumberland Coast, typically around late spring to early summer. These increasing sightings suggest a promising future for marine wildlife tourism in the region – and provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for guests visiting Warkworth and the surrounding area.
